Being A 'Helping Hand' for VAN
Pain and desperation induced by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Van do not seem to be easing after weeks of suffering. In addition to dealing with the devastation of loosing the loved ones and homes, most earthquake victims fight with the harsh winter conditions.Aftershocks damaged most of the buildings that were not impacted by the first earthquake. The inevitable chain of these aftershocks only increased the victim population as those whose homes remained relatively undamaged can not return to their homes as the associated risks linger. In short, residents of Van face extreme desperation. As the winter conditions worsen, the residents hold on to life with the help sent many places in Turkey as well as in the world. What help represents for the residents goes far beyond what the help represents materially and it established a link to life. Turkish Republic Day Celebration
Republic day commemorating the proclamation of the republic in October 29, 1923 was celebrated at the Turkish Cultural Center of Albany. The recent earthquake and terrorist attacks significantly shadowed the celebrations. The program started with a minute of silence dedicated for those who were martyred in the independence war that led to the establishment of the independent Republic of Turkiye as well as those who were martyred during their country service as result of horrendous terrorist attacks. 9-11 Commemoration EventThe Turkish-American community has been a significant contributor to social harmony in the nation by organizing events, trips, and conferences for inter-cultural dialogue and understanding. As our hearts bleed for the victims of the 9/11, we believe that we altogether-regardless of our distinct cultures, ethnicities, and races- do share a common dream: A peaceful world, in which love is very much loved and hatred is doomed to be hated. Grand Opening
On October 16 2010, Turkish Cultural Center Albany (TCCA) opened its doors to the New York’s Capital District Community at the Grand Opening Ceremony held its new building located at 291 Broadway, Menands, NY. TCCA has purchased a 5500 sqft, two-story building this year, and recently completed its restorations to accommodate the educational and cultural activities that will benefit more than 1000 Turkish residents and the broad Capital District community. Taking an active role in raising a peaceful multicultural society, opening of this new building is a major milestone for the local Turkish community. In his opening speech, Dr. Ali Can, president of TCCA, thanked Behice Demirel and her family for their contributions, and announced that the educational activities of TCCA will be organized under the name “Behice Demirel Learning Center (BDLC).” Some of BDLC educational activities include Turkish, English, cooking, Turkish arts classes, and after school programs in math, science, computers and writing.
Noah's Pudding DaysNoah’s Pudding Days in Capital District ( A Day of Sharing and Reflection)
Every year Turkish Cultural Center' volunteers prepare a dessert called Ashura (Noah’s Pudding) to observe tradition celebrating the landing of Noah’s Ark after the Great Flood, which has references in the Holy Books of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Turkish Americans living in the Capital District Area offer Noah's Pudding to their neighbors, friends at work or in the schools.
